(and why digital files need more protection than you think)
In a world where everything lives on a phone, a cloud, or a hard drive, printing your photos can feel old-fashioned. But in the last 15 years as a newborn photographer, I’ve seen time and time again how powerful — and important — printed images truly are.
Printed photographs don’t just preserve a moment. They preserve a *memory*… a feeling… a season of life you can never return to. And unlike digital files, printed photos don’t disappear with a failed update or forgotten password.
Here’s why investing in printed artwork matters, especially when it comes to your baby’s first portraits.
**Printed Photos Are the Most Reliable Form of Preservation**
Technology changes quickly. Do you remember CDs? USBs with strange connectors? The first cloud storage apps that no longer exist?
Digital formats come and go, but printed photographs don’t require:
– software
– electricity
– login credentials
– compatible devices
– updated operating systems
A printed photograph is *future-proof*.
It will still be here when your baby grows up… and when your grandchildren do.
**Printed Artwork Gives Your Memories a Daily Presence**
A digital photo lives in a folder. A printed photo lives in your home.
Seeing your baby’s tiny features displayed on your wall or bound in an heirloom album brings warmth and connection into your space. It becomes part of your family’s story — visible, cherished, and woven into your everyday life.
Prints remind you, your child, and everyone who visits your home: “This moment mattered.”
**Digital Files Alone Are Shockingly Fragile**
Many families don’t realize how easily digital files can be lost forever:
– Phones break
– Cloud accounts expire
– Hard drives fail
– USBs are misplaced
– Memory cards corrupt
– Technology becomes outdated
– Passwords get lost
I’ve had clients come to me devastated after losing all of their child’s early photos.
It happens far more often than people expect.
** If You *Do* Have Digital Files — You Must Back Them Up Properly**
Digital files are incredibly convenient… but only when protected correctly.
I strongly recommend the **3–2–1 backup method**:
**3 copies of your images**
**2 different types of storage** (ex: external hard drive + computer or cloud)
**1 copy stored off-site** (ex: cloud, vault, parent’s house, safety deposit box)
Examples of a safe digital backup plan:
– Copy 1: Your computer
– Copy 2: An external hard drive
– Copy 3: A cloud service like Google Photos, iCloud, or Backblaze
This protects against fire, floods, theft, or technology failure — the things no one expects but everyone should plan for.
**Printed Photos Are a Legacy, Not Just a File**
Your baby’s first portraits will someday be your child’s keepsakes.
Then their children’s.
And their children’s.
Heirloom albums, fine art prints, and wall collections become part of your family history — something tangible you can hold, pass down, and treasure.
Your story deserves to exist beyond a screen.

**Final Thoughts**
Digital files are wonderful for sharing and storing… but printed photographs are what truly preserve a moment for generations. They are lasting, reliable, and deeply meaningful.
As a newborn photographer, I’m passionate about creating artwork that doesn’t disappear with a software update — pieces that your family will cherish long after the newborn days have passed.
Your memories deserve a place in your home, not just a place on your phone.
